White Spot Detected on Queensland Prawn Farm

02 December 2016

AUSTRALIA - White spot disease, a highly contagious viral disease of prawns, has been detected on a prawn farm south of Brisbane.

White spot disease and the virus that causes it are both exotic to Australia and pose a significant threat to the national prawn farming industry.

The disease causes prawn mortality but does not pose a threat to human health or food safety.

Prawns from this farm will not enter any domestic or international markets, nor will they be processed for human consumption.

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (QDAF) is leading the response to this incident.

QDAF officers have attended the farm and put in place biosecurity and movement controls.
