Environmental Sustainability Focus for Chilean Salmon Farming Industry
25 October 2016CHILE - The Chilean salmon farming industry needs to focus less on prices and profits and more on the health, environmental and social performance of industry, said Chile's Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Raul Súnico, speaking at the Aqua-Sur 2016 event.
Mr Sunico said that "the salmon industry should understand the importance of environmental sustainability."
Mr Súnico further stated that in the last six years, the regulation and control of salmon farming has advanced tremendously in terms of sustainability.
With this in mind, the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism together with the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture announced, during the first half of the year, an agenda which aims to improve competitiveness and to have sustainable development of the industry.
In this regard Mr Sunico explained that they revised the production model and that has to do with the basis for calculating the regulation density and mobility of production.
Finally, Mr Sunico said: "The task ahead is to promote aquaculture in those other segments where we are certain it can provide significant welfare benefits. This takes time because it involves learning about a new productive activity and implies a profound cultural change."
