New Speakers Confirmed for Offshore Mariculture 2017

28 November 2016

MEXICO - The 7th Offshore Mariculture Conference, being held for the first time in Mexico, will take place from 6-10 March 2017 at the Ensenada Centre of the Arts, Baja California. The Conference will help to identify and define the opportunities available to fish farmers, investors and producers and will focus on the offshore farming of marine fin fish and the production of Abalone, Seaweed and Bivalves.

The conference programme is steadily growing with a number of confirmed speakers in the session on finfish species currently being farmed in Mexico. Day one will begin with an introduction by the Conference Chairman, Pablo Arenas Fuentes, Director General of the Mexican National Institute of Fisheries (INAPESCA).

Among the confirmed speakers is Pacifico Aquaculture, a striped bass producer located 8 miles off the coast of Ensenada, offering the world’s only ocean raised striped bass from the Pacific coast of Mexico. Their fish are raised in one of the best locations in the world for responsible marine aquaculture; offering clear, clean and deep oceanic waters with strong currents and excellent protection from the elements.

Pacifico state that their philosophy is ‘to build a business that will feed the world with sustainable seafood for today and the future… while creating a neutral impact on the ocean environment and a positive impact on world fisheries’.

The striped bass they produce can be enjoyed raw as sashimi or sushi due to its sweet, mild flavour and firm texture that is prized by chefs in California.

Other sessions to be included in the conference are filling up fast so this is your last chance to submit an abstract. The programme will provide informative case studies covering the following topics:

  • Recent developments in offshore mariculture
  • The Farming of Finfish in Baja California
  • Opportunities for the Mexican Market – worldwide case studies of alternative species
  • Applied research: Studies into processes at the breeding and hatchery level
  • Market opportunities for sustainably raised offshore fish
  • The Offshore Farming Business – investments and considerations
  • Offshore Technology – innovation and opportunities
  • Nutrition for farmed fish: tradition vs change
  • How disease affects productivity
  • The value added supply chain

A further one and a half days of technical visits to several offshore fish farms, hatcheries and research centres in the Ensenada region of Baja California will bring the conference to a close.

Offshore Mariculture 2017 has been deemed to be of great importance by Federal and Regional Mexican government bodies and has been granted their full official support, ensuring the highest level of contribution on both domestic and international levels.

The cocktail welcome reception on the evening of the 6 March will mark the start of the 7th Offshore Mariculture Conference. The following evening will host the conference gala dinner at the beautiful Riviera cultural centre in Ensenada where some delicious local cuisine will be served. Both of these events are highly valued by conference delegates as they provide the perfect platform for networking and offer a vital opportunity to meet other key figures in the industry.
